Account Limits with ASN

From BARS W9YT

For getting started with and managing your account see BARS Account & Profile, this is an administrative page

Background

To avoid requiring email addresses, and to reduce time a new user needs to start using Wavelog, accounts are given access based on origin network. When network based access is used, the user does not have to open their email inbox or enter codes.

ASN

The ASN AS59 is used to give users permission. Once an account authenticates from AS59 the account is given permission by being added to the asn_validated group. Group membership holds, even if the user authenticates from a different network.

To see which IP ranges are in AS59, check University of Wisconsin Knowledge Base article 3988 in Network Services "Well-known UW-Madison Campus IP Address Ranges and Hosts" (login required).

Auto Membership to Club Logbook

Access to the W9YT Club Station logbook is controlled by wavelog_w9yt group.

Once added to the asn_validated group, users are automatically added to wavelog_w9yt group. This occurs when users are manually added to the asn_validated group or when added to the asn_validated group because they authenticated from AS59.

To grant users access to Wavelog but not the W9YT Club Station logbook, add them to asn_validated group then remove them from wavelog_w9yt group.

Manually Removing Limits

If a user is unable to use WiscVPN, Campus WiFi, UW-Madison Guest WiFi, or a CAE desktop, they can be manually added to the asn_validated group.

  1. On w9yt.org > Members > Manage Profile & Account
  2. Applications > Security Admin Console
  3. Groups > asn_validated
